Field Trips

Field trips at Historic Rock Castle take your students back in time to live the life of a frontiersman/frontierswoman like Daniel & Sarah Smith, the founders of Rock Castle.

Participants will take a guided tour of the historic home, learning what it was like for the Smith family, which included 2 young children, to live on the North Carolina frontier in 1784. They will engage with daily colonial life through hands-on activities such as Quill Writing and 18th Century Toys & Games. Younger students will try their hand at archaeology in our Discovery Box, and older students will practice their decoding skills on a cypher wheel invented by Thomas Jefferson in our Cypher Secrets activity.

Our field trips align with the Tennessee State Standards for 4th grade American History. However, they are appropriate for all elementary and middle school age students. For High School students, we recommend a regular House Tour.

Field Trips require at least 2-week advanced reservation, and 20 paying-attendee minimum.

Available Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays April through October

Cost: $8 / participant (student and adult/parent/chaperone); employed Teachers are free
