What kind of water shoes are best?
Anything that will stay on their feet while swimming (Frontier, July American Girl, Revolutionary Adventure, and Survivor Camps ONLY).
Anything that is comfortable to run around in (each camp does water games each day).
Many campers wear old sneakers, or Chaco or Teva type sandals
Please note, campers are required to wear shoes at all times while at Camp. If a camper does not have shoes he/she can wear in the water, they will not be allowed to participate in the water games or kayaking/Lake time
My child is not a strong swimmer and/or I am uncomfortable with him/her being in the Lake. Are there other options during Lake time at Frontier & July American Girl Camp?
Yes - we will have water games on land, and other activities (crafts, Eno-ing, games, etc) that they have the option to do instead of kayaking/swimming.
What happens in the case of inclement weather?
Rock Castle Camps are rain or shine. We will be outdoors at all times (even in rain) unless there is lightning in the area. In that case, we will move into the newly-constructed Barn on-site, and continue activities, until it passes.
If we know in advance that there is the potential for inclement weather during the camp day, we will move Camp to the gym at Indian Lake Peninsula Church (right up the road from Rock Castle). We will contact parents individually prior to Camp drop-off to communicate this change if necessary. This would only be in the case of high probability for inclement weather for a significant portion of the Camp day.
We have an excellent Meteorologist — Bree Smith — on our Board of Directors, and she helps us make the best decision regarding weather.
Is having / bringing an American Girl Doll required?
Not at all! Most campers bring some type of doll to American Girl Camp — we offer a free play option each day when they can play with their dolls together and create doll houses — but not every camper chooses this option. If they do bring a doll, it does not have to be American Girl Doll brand. Other popular brands with a similar style that our campers bring are Our Generation (Target) and My Life As (WalMart).
